Lunch Fun

Lance and I both happened to have the day off today, and we heard that there was going to be a food truck event in the parking lot of the Hiller Aviation Museum right here in nearby San Carlos.  Actually, they will be out there every Wednesday through October 26th.  We watched the Food Network show The Great Food Truck Race last year (Season 2 is currently running), and Nom Nom Truck was one of the finalists.  We heard they were going to be there, so we decided to head over.   

They served amazing looking Banh Mi on the show and I couldn't wait to try it.  And I was definitely glad I did!  The grilled pork was to die for!  It started at 11 am and we got there shortly thereafter, but the lines were starting already.  There were several trucks there, but Nom Nom was definitely the attraction.  The line got very long, but we got there before the worst of it.

We also got a Panini from Speedy Panini, which was also great.

And Lance got a fish taco from Streetz Eatz which he said was also good.  All in all, a fun little lunch excursion on a lazy day off!

Quilt Blocks for Flood Victims

You may have heard about the recent devastating floods in the Nashville area of Tennessee. Anna Maria Horner is a fabric designer and quilting/sewing author who lives in the area, and has decided to help out her community. She has put together a program called Rainbow Around the Block, where you can make 12 1/2" blocks (see specifics) and send them to her. She has a crew that will assemble the blocks into quilts and distribute to local families. She will also accept completed quilts -- hop over to her site for all of the details and help out our community!

Hometown Holidays 2007

Redwood City's Hometown Holidays was this weekend. The Hudaks came out because they had such a great time last year. The big attraction was, of course, the snow play area which they were able to walk right into last year. Unfortunately this year it was so popular that there was a line to get in the snow that had to be about a block long. We found out later that the wait was about 30 minutes, and you had to sign a release before getting in the snow. That was a little bit too long of a wait for the boys, so we did some other activities instead.

Lance and I didn't make it back to the tree lighting and fireworks this year. It was so nice and warm when we got home, we decided to skip it. It was nice to see several people we know from the community at the event! Next year's will be here before we know it!

The Big Read

The Big Read is taking place this month! As a community, Redwood City is reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This program is presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and the biggest local sponsor is Montalvo Arts Center. They have really gone all-out in presenting this event. There are copies of this book all over the city, in shops and restaurants, and even randomly placed on park and bus benches. The idea is to give out the book for free, have people read it, and pass it on. I found out about it last month and so Lance and I grabbed copies and got to reading. I had never read the book before, but it had been on my "want to read someday" list from way back. I even had an old copy of it in a box of books. We both finished it in time for the kick-off gala at the old restored courthouse in downtown Redwood City last Friday night. It was a very nice reception with lots of local names. The mayor, former mayor, city council members, and even Assemblyman Ira Ruskin were in attendance. There was food and music and, in keeping with the theme of the book, a booth where you could write down and submit a personal rememberance of a time when you personally felt censored. Our attendance was somewhat spur-of-the-moment, so unfortuantely I didn't have my camera on me, but the restored courthouse was spectacular.

There will be over 40 events this month related to The Big Read, including drop-in book discussions, screenings of the film, an interview with Ray Bradbury via satellite, and a street fair at Courthouse Square on the last day fo the month.
